Stop Labour’s Congestion Causing Millbrook Road Bus Lane Plans

Stop Labour’s Congestion Causing Millbrook Road Bus Lane Plans
The Issue
We call on Southampton City Council to rule out any new bus lane schemes on Millbrook Road West or Mountbatten Way that would worsen congestion, worsen pollution and lead to local streets in Regents Park becoming rat runs.
In November 2024, the Council carried out a Traffic Regulation Order consultation (a legal requirement), proposing to…
- Turn the left‑turn‑only lane on Millbrook Road West (at Regents Park Road) into a bus lane.
- Add a short bus lane on Redbridge Road near Parkside Avenue and the Millbrook Roundabout slip road.
Labour’s wider plans for bus lanes near Millbrook Roundabout and on Mountbatten Way had previously been shelved following strong opposition. The revised Council traffic modelling that we pushed for, showed that there would be significant tailbacks, reinforcing these concerns.
For years, residents and we as your local Councillors have warned these proposals would:
🚗 Increase congestion on already busy roads
🏘️ Push traffic into residential streets, like King George’s Avenue
🛒 Add to the pressure of Costco (and the petrol station) traffic
⚓ Disrupt commuter and docks traffic
🚌 Potentially slow buses at peak times
In August 2025, the Council revoked the bus lane Traffic Regulation Order, after we challenged issues with the process - meaning any future proposal would require a new consultation. We are now told future decisions will be put back to September - AFTER the Council elections (conveniently).
✋ What we’re asking for
- No bus lane on Millbrook Road West.
- No revisiting of Labour’s plans for a bus lane leading on to Millbrook Roundabout.
- No revisiting of Labour’s plans for bus lanes on Mountbatten Way.
- Transport solutions that keep the city moving, without increasing congestion.
🖊️ Please sign to help us reach 500 signatures and send a clear message to the Labour Council: Southampton needs better transport solutions - not more traffic congestion!
- Councillors Jeremy Moulton and Steven Galton, Conservative Councillors for Millbrook
