Stop Labour Party's Benefit Cuts Affecting Disabled and Mental Health Groups
Stop Labour Party's Benefit Cuts Affecting Disabled and Mental Health Groups
The Issue
Ever since I had to leave employment in 2023, I have dedicated my life to caring for my family. I am a full-time, unpaid carer for my husband—whose long-term illness means he relies on Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity (LCWRA) and Personal Independence Payment (PIP) benefits just to maintain a basic level of stability—and I also provide home education for our autistic daughter. Every decision I make is steeped in love and sacrifice, but the long-term consequences of these benefit cuts threaten to unravel the fragile support network that our family has painstakingly built over time.
The newly proposed benefits cuts by the Labour Party, targeting Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity (LCW & LCWRA), are alarming. These cuts indiscriminately affect all individuals with disabilities and mental health conditions, including those whose primary conditions are Autism, ADHD, and Dyspraxia. Such measures will undoubtedly plunge more families like mine into deeper poverty and hardship.
Data from the Department for Work and Pensions reveals that over 2 million disabled individuals rely on these benefits to make ends meet. Removing or reducing these benefits means forcing people into impossible choices between basic needs like food, heating, and medication.
The emotional and psychological toll of financial insecurity further exacerbates both physical and mental health conditions, making it counterintuitive to cut these lifelines. Families that are already stretched to the limits will find it increasingly difficult to cope, leading to an increase in mental health crises, homelessness, and extreme poverty levels.
I am calling on the Labour Party to reconsider these proposed cuts. Every individual deserves the right to live with dignity and have access to essential support regardless of their health conditions. Instead of cutting these vital benefits, it is imperative to assess and audit the effectiveness of existing programs and find ways to improve them.
Join me in urging the Labour Party to halt these damaging benefit cuts and ensure no one is left behind. Please sign this petition to voice our collective opposition and protect the rights of our most vulnerable citizens. Signing this petition is a step towards safeguarding the future for families across the country. Let's work together for a more inclusive and supportive society.
