Stop Industrial Wind Turbine Farms in Arkansas

Stop Industrial Wind Turbine Farms in Arkansas
The Issue
Silence is consent. We are committed to retaining the unique character of our beloved Arkansas, the "Natural State". Arkansas is one of the few states still untouched by Wind Industrial Turbines (WIT) or the Industrial Wind Complex. Let's work together to keep it that way. A proposed wind farm on 9,000 acres of a vibrant cattle and poultry farming community is under threat. Carroll County, is known for Eureka Springs, a tourist destination spot, hiking, floating the Buffalo River and motorcycle cruising on the "pig trail". Protect the Ozarks !
Benefits Refuted:
- Promises of 200 new jobs: Most wind companies supply their own specialized construction teams. The reality is that local job growth is unlikely due to current labor shortages.
- Increased local business revenues: Berryville and Green Forest either lack the necessary lodging facilities or are generally occupied by locals. Workers generally spend more money near their lodging sites, which we do not have available.
- Tax revenue: All wind companies love to boast how much money they will pay in property taxes and how much will go to the schools. The tax Assessors makes that decision, not the wind company. In addition, most wind companies employ tactics to reduce the amount of taxes paid! Such as fast track depreciation, asking for state or local discounts, abatements or payment programs. Some wind companies have protested their tax bills and when they didn't win, they sued the County Assessor! In addition, majority of wind companies fold up, change names, change ownership or simply sell the wind project around the five year mark.
Potential Private Property Hazards Include:
- Threats to the health, safety and well-being of all residents, livestock, pets and wildlife.
- Our area is cited for 5 endangered bats. It is well documented bats are being killed up to 950,000 per year in North America.
- Wind lobbyist have been successful in loosening the restrictions for the Bald & Golden Eagle Protection Act and The Migratory Bird Act. By doing so, wind companies apply for "Incidental Take Permits" absolving them of the crimes of killing eagles. It is estimated up to 679,000 birds per year in North America are killed due to turbines.
- Improper siting on karst terrain. Our northwest Arkansas is the most karst area in Arkansas. There is potential damage to our springs and sandstone stability during excavation, construction and use.
- Increased soil erosion and storm water runoff from the removal of topsoil.
- Destruction of our natural tornado buffer--happens when they clear cut a large portion of the 9,500 acres that is now 75% wooded.
- Interference with phone service, internet and emergency communication devices. A "nuisance" stated in the wind lease.
- Potential delays for Air Ambulance services. As the pilots will need to find a new location, away from turbines.
- Risk of accidents from ice throws, brake failures, oil leaks and electrical fires that can not be extinguished at 650' height.
- Pollution of springs, ponds and hay fields with fiberglass particles when blades delaminate or break, sending shards for miles.
- Contamination of ground and waters due to toxic BPA material breakdown.
- Increased fire risk from lightning strikes, given that Arkansas ranks 5th nationwide for lightning activity.
- Economic loss through property value decline and reduced tourism, affecting entrepreneurs, middle-class business owners and county taxes.
- Damage to county roads with a 2,000 % increase in vehicular traffic plus excessive weight .
- Wind companies already acknowledge the potential for harm due to vibration, shadow flicker, sound and infrasound or else they would not ask for the easement holder to waive the right to sue the wind company for damages. Infrasound can travel 5 miles and further. Wouldn't those neighbors also be subject to damages?
- BUILD IT WHERE YOU USE IT ! The electricity produced would likely be sold out of state.
- What happens in the year 2060? Year of decommissioning, All the elected officials will be in the ground or in a nursing home by then, so there will be no accountability follow-up. Our grandchildren will have to deal with the decisions of today in 35 + years!
Lets rally together to Protect the Ozarks! Use contact form to reach me to collaborate to preserve all of Arkansas, the Natural State.
