The Issue

The ocean around Mauritius is home to diverse sea creatures,  including  Whales ,which attracts tourists from around the world. Despite  existing laws in place to protect marine life in Mauritius which clearly prohibits swimming and freediving with Whales , there has been a growing trend of illegal practices with whales .

Whales are often disturbed by tourists or tour operators who approach or chase them too closely , and even swim directly alongside them, often without proper knowledge or respect for the animals’ space. This can cause stress and disrupt their natural behaviours, including feeding, resting, and nurturing their young. Such disturbances not only threaten the wellbeing of whales but can also have cascading effects on the entire marine ecosystem.

The lack of stringent enforcement in Mauritius allows these illegal activities to continue, making it easy for tour operators and individual tourists to continue these harmful activities with minimal consequences. It's crucial for local authorities to strengthen law enforcement and for tour operators to adhere strictly to regulations that protect marine life.

Below are a few links and images of illegal swimming practices with whales happening in the last few months in Mauritius.

What we demand :

This petition calls for increased resources devoted to monitoring and enforcement, including more patrols and stiffer penalties , revocation of licenses and imprisonment for illegal activities. Additionally, educational campaigns should be conducted to raise awareness among tourists and local communities about the impact of illegal whale swims and the importance of respecting marine life.

Sign this petition to urge the government of Mauritius to take immediate action to protect our whales and preserve the island's rich marine biodiversity for future generations.
