Stop Illegal Motorbike Riding in Tony Merrel Park

The issue

Most of us here in Leichhardt have observed how the tranquility of Tony Merrel Park has been shattered by the reckless and illegal activities of motorbike riders. My frustration, shared by many in our community, comes from numerous complaints that seem to have fallen on deaf ears. These riders show a blatant disregard for our peace and safety, invading our park, disturbing our rest, and frightening our cherished wildlife.

Motorbike riders ruthlessly tear through the park, an area intended for families, children, and relaxation. Their reckless behavior not only endangers local wildlife, such as our kangaroo population, but also deters residents from enjoying outdoor activities. The noise pollution is unbearable, affecting children’s sleep and making it impossible for shift workers and others needing rest to find any peace during the day.

The danger does not stop there; these riders extend their reckless conduct to surrounding roads, endangering drivers and pedestrians alike. Their hazardous driving increases the risk of accidents, putting our community in constant fear.

Despite multiple complaints, the absence of effective action from local authorities has allowed the issue to persist. This is a call to Ipswich City Council to take immediate and effective action to enforce existing laws prohibiting illegal motorbike riding in Tony Merrel Park.

We urge the council to increase patrolling in the area, utilize surveillance, and impose stringent penalties on those caught riding illegally. It is imperative to install clear signage in and around the park, emphasizing the illegality of such activities, and informing the public about the consequences of breaking these rules.

We deserve a safe and peaceful community. Please sign this petition to urge the Ipswich City Council to protect our neighborhoods and preserve the tranquility of Tony Merrel Park for everyone to enjoy.
