Stop ICE from Using the Salt Lake City Warehouse as a Detention Facility

Stop ICE from Using the Salt Lake City Warehouse as a Detention Facility
The Issue
We, the residents and supporters of Salt Lake City and Utah, strongly oppose the planned conversion of the recently purchased warehouse at 6020 W 300 S into an ICE detention facility.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has already acquired this property, but there has been no public transparency, community consultation, or detailed plan shared with residents. We believe that our neighborhoods, families, and civil liberties deserve to be protected.
ICE detention facilities have been associated with:
- Family separation and prolonged detentions
- Limited access to legal support and basic rights
- Trauma and harm to individuals and communities
These outcomes are not consistent with Salt Lake City's values, which prioritize community safety, dignity, and transparency.
We respectfully call on city and state leaders, as well as Utah's federal representatives, to:
- Demand full transparency from ICE about any intended use of the warehouse.
- Hold public hearings so community voices can be heard and considered.
- Explore alternatives that do not negatively impact local neighborhoods or civil liberties.
- Protect Utah communities from the establishment of a large detention center without public consent.
Salt Lake City should remain a city where community values, human rights, and local voices are respected.
We urge all decision-makers to act now to prevent this warehouse from becoming a detention facility.
Signed,
Residents and Supporters of Salt Lake City
