Stop ICE from establishing detention facility in Roxbury

Stop ICE from establishing detention facility in Roxbury

The Issue

For many of us in Roxbury, New Jersey, our homes and community are symbols of safety, unity, and dignity. The proposal to establish an ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) detention facility in our town greatly disrupts this vision. On a personal level, I feel an overwhelming sense of responsibility to stand against this proposal because I cannot condone human rights abuses in any form. Creating such a facility in a place we call home is antithetical to the values of compassion and respect that our community stands for.

Detention facilities often lead to a cascade of social and moral dilemmas. Reports from various human rights organizations have raised alarms about the conditions faced by detainees in similar facilities across the country. According to Human Rights Watch, immigrants in detention face issues such as inadequate medical care, poorly maintained facilities, and violations of their basic rights. Moreover, in many cases, people detained by ICE have no criminal records and are ripped from their families and communities unjustly, exacerbating their trauma.

Roxbury should be a sanctuary, not a site of suffering. By constructing a detention center here, we potentially normalize a cycle of fear and separation in our backyard. There are viable, humane alternatives to detention that have proven effective, such as community-based programs and ankle monitoring, which are not only more ethical but also cost-effective.

We urge our local and state leaders to listen to their constituents and prioritize humane and just treatment of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status. The establishment of a detention center in Roxbury would not only tarnish the reputation of our community but also stand against the principles of humanity and equality.

Together, we can protect our town and its residents from becoming part of a system that many view as broken and inhumane. Stand with us to keep Roxbury a beacon of hope and humanity. Sign this petition to stop ICE from establishing a detention facility in Roxbury and keep our community true to its values.
