Stop Hueneme High School from forcing the Clocked app
The Issue
We are students at Hueneme High School, and we are speaking out against the mandatory use of an app called Clocked, which we are being forced to use starting Monday. This app, developed by college students and still in development, is being imposed on us without our consent, causing unrest among students and parents.
The administration's decision to mandate Clocked on our personal devices, namely our phones, is not only an invasion of privacy but also a breach of our rights as students. It’s important to emphasize that our phones are our personal property, and we oppose any form of compulsory usage of applications that we believe infringe on our privacy.
Moreover, the enforcement strategy is harsh and punitive. Students are being threatened with lowered grades, yelled at, or sent to the office for non-compliance. This is unacceptable and has created a hostile learning environment for many. We've also seen instances where parents are called without justification, adding unnecessary stress to families.
This issue is not just about a single app; it is a call to respect our privacy and our rights as students. We believe there are alternative solutions that can be explored—solutions that respect both the need for school-wide discipline and our personal boundaries.
School administrations should prioritize open dialogue with students and parents to discuss viable and consensual methods for whatever problem Clocked intends to solve. We recommend forming a committee of students, parents, and teachers to explore these alternatives. The involvement in app selection should be transparent and collaborative, taking into account the feedback and concerns of all stakeholders involved.
