Stop Housing Demolitions – Protect Our Homes, Communities, and Rights
The Issue
Across the UK, housing demolitions are destroying communities, displacing residents, and forcing people into insecure, unaffordable housing. The consultation process used to justify these demolitions is deeply flawed, often shutting out the voices of the very people whose homes are at risk.
We demand an immediate halt to housing demolition schemes until a fair, democratic, and transparent process is put in place—one that respects the rights of residents, protects communities, and prioritises sustainable alternatives like retrofitting and repair.
Why is this important?
🔸 Homeowners lose out. Those who own their homes often find that compensation falls far short of what it would cost to buy another property in the same area. People are priced out of their own communities and pushed into debt or worse housing situations.
🔸 Social housing tenants are forced into higher rents and service charges. Promises of “like-for-like” replacements are rarely delivered. Tenants often end up with insecure tenancies, higher housing costs, and unaffordable service charges that push families into poverty.
🔸 Consultations are a sham. Regeneration and demolition plans are pushed through despite widespread opposition. Consultations are confusing, badly publicised, and rigged to deliver the outcomes developers want—not what residents need.
🔸 Ethnic minority communities are hit hardest. Black, Asian, and other minoritised communities often live in the very estates targeted for demolition, and they face disproportionate disruption, displacement, and the loss of long-standing community networks. For Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) people, demolition schemes and redevelopment often target Traveller sites and roadside stopping places. These demolitions deepen the housing crisis for GRT families, many of whom are already denied safe, secure, and legal places to live. Forced out of their own communities, GRT people often face increased discrimination and criminalisation simply for trying to find a place to stop.
🔸 We need sustainable alternatives. The UK faces both a housing crisis and a climate crisis. Demolition wastes energy and resources, while refurbishment, retrofitting, and community-led improvements protect both the environment and our communities.
We call on the UK Government, devolved administrations, and local authorities to:
✅ Halt all current and proposed housing demolition schemes.
✅ Reform the consultation process to put real power in the hands of residents, including minoritised and marginalised communities.
✅ Guarantee full rights for homeowners and social tenants, including the right to remain in their community, with genuinely affordable housing.
✅ Protect Gypsy, Roma and Traveller stopping places and residential sites, and ensure GRT people have a say in local housing decisions.
✅ Invest in retrofit, repair, and community-led alternatives to demolition.
Our homes are not for profit. Our communities are not for sale. Sign this petition to protect homes, protect people, and protect our future.
