The Issue
I live very close to beautiful farmland that is not just a part of our local greenery but a crucial element of our community's identity and tranquility. This cherished farmland, part of the green belt, provides us with a serene landscape, perfect for walks and a vantage point offering sweeping views of the valley all the way to Bracknell. The presence of cows and lush green pastures enriches our daily lives and offers a rare escape from the concrete and chaos of urban life.
However, this rural charm is under threat as plans are underway to replace this precious farmland with housing developments. Our green belt land, originally established to prevent urban sprawl and protect our natural landscapes, is invaluable for maintaining biodiversity, fighting climate change, and supporting local agriculture. Turning this land into a housing estate would irreversibly damage our environment and heritage.
According to the Campaign to Protect Rural England, the green belt covers a mere 13% of England’s land mass, yet faces constant pressure for development. The loss of this farmland would not only strip away the natural beauty but also compromise the local ecosystem that supports various flora and fauna.
Urban expansion should not come at the cost of destroying our environment. We should focus on regenerating brownfield sites, offering more sustainable development solutions without sacrificing our natural landscapes. Furthermore, enhancing existing urban areas should take precedence by utilizing vacant properties and rejuvenating underused spaces.
I urge our local council and planners to reconsider these building proposals and opt for sustainable development strategies that prioritize green belt conservation. Let us protect our countryside’s beauty for future generations, ensuring that our local community and biodiversity can thrive without the looming threat of constant development.
Please sign this petition to stop houses from being built on our precious farmland within the green belt, preserving it for the wonder it brings today and tomorrow.
