As expected, the Borough Council approved the ordinance to allow for the permanent closure of S.3rd Avenue, and turn it into a "Pedestrian Mall". According to Teri Jover, Borough Administrator, this is what the Boro has to call it pursuant to a particular statute.
The administration stated that the purpose of passing the ordinance was to submit it to the NJ Dept. of Transportation as part of its application for permanent closure.
There were a number of callers participating in the meeting, about 50/50 for and against. The callers in favor of the closure made very similar statements about how the temporary and illegal closures of South 3rd during the pandemic affected their lives, as if having tables on the road surface of South 3rd Avenue had some magical properties that exists no-where else.
We will continue to follow and monitor the progress of the street closure. We are speaking with some attorneys about taking legal action and will post any updates if and when they become appropriate.
