Municipal Election Candidate Update

With Surrey’s municipal election approaching, the Ocean Park Neighbourhood Alliance has begun contacting mayoral candidates to find out where they stand on the proposed 89 townhouse development at 128th Street and 24th Avenue, as well as the broader issues affecting Ocean Park and Crescent Beach.

These include future density and land use, tree protection, traffic and infrastructure, school capacity, and preservation of neighbourhood character.

Our goal is simple: to give residents clear, direct information about what each candidate is prepared to commit to.

The Alliance is an independent community organization and is not affiliated with any political party or campaign. We are contacting candidates across the political spectrum and will share their responses and commitments with the community.

Doug McCallum:  

Mr. McCallum responded to our request the same day and agreed to meet with us. He is also the first candidate to have met directly with the Alliance and provided specific written commitments on both the proposed development and the broader future of Ocean Park and Crescent Beach.

During the meeting, we discussed the 89 townhouse proposal at 128th Street and 24th Avenue, the concerns raised by residents, and how Ocean Park and Crescent Beach should be planned as Surrey continues to grow.

Commitment on the 89 Townhome Development

Mr. McCallum told us that, if elected with the majority required to implement his agenda, the proposed 89 townhouse development at 128th Street and 24th Avenue would not proceed.

Because of the importance of this commitment, we asked him to confirm his position in writing.

His response was:

“Yes, I confirm that I will not allow it to proceed.”

Broader Commitment to Ocean Park and Crescent Beach
We also asked Mr. McCallum for a written statement outlining his position on the future of Ocean Park and Crescent Beach.

He provided the following statement for publication:

“Ocean Park and Crescent Beach are among the last neighbourhoods of their kind in Surrey, and once their tree canopy and character are gone, no future council can bring them back. My commitment to these communities is clear. Once elected, everything from 140th Street west to the ocean, all of Ocean Park and Crescent Beach, will receive heritage designation. The zoning will be frozen as single family. A no-tree-cut bylaw will protect the canopy. These neighbourhoods will stay exactly as they are, and no provincial housing bill and no future council will quietly change what took a century to grow. The residents of Ocean Park and Crescent Beach have organized to protect the communities they love, and as Mayor, I will stand with them.”

These commitments directly address the issues the Alliance has been advocating for, including stopping the proposed development, maintaining single family zoning, protecting the tree canopy, and preserving the character of Ocean Park and Crescent Beach.

Mr. McCallum’s team has also provided additional material outlining his proposed approach for the area from 140th Street west to the ocean, which is attached for residents to review.

Our Commitment to the Community
More than 3,400 residents have signed our petition, demonstrating the strength of community concern about the future of Ocean Park.

We will continue to press candidates for clear answers and clear commitments.

Our community deserves to know where those seeking to lead Surrey stand on the decisions that could shape Ocean Park and Crescent Beach for decades to come.
