The February 23 public hearing was a strong success for our community. Over 200 residents attended, with more than 40 speakers voicing thoughtful and informed opposition. The outcome reflected this engagement, as the proposal was sent back to City staff for further review and additional assessment
Momentum continued on March 4, when another large turnout opposed the proposed Official Community Plan update known as Surrey 2050. While City planning staff stated that Ocean Park’s “urban” designation would not change, it became clear that the definition of urban has been broadened to allow for increased density. This distinction is critical and remains a major concern for residents.
There is growing belief within the community that decisions on these matters may be delayed until after the upcoming municipal election.
As we approach the election, residents are paying close attention to which candidates support the community and which appear to prioritize development interests.
We have launched a new website, https://saveoceanpark.ca/ to keep residents informed and engaged. This platform allows community members to stay updated and formally register their concerns. Building strong participation here is essential to demonstrate that opposition remains active and organized.
Key concerns remain consistent and well supported:
City staff have identified the proposal as too dense.
The site is designated suburban and does not align with current planning policy.
There is no neighbourhood plan supporting this level of development.
Community opposition is longstanding and well documented.
Infrastructure and traffic concerns have not been adequately addressed.
There is no clear public benefit to justify increased density.
Next steps for The Ocean Park Alliance include meeting with all Council and mayoral candidates to understand their positions, and beginning the process of pursuing downzoning in Ocean Park to better reflect the character of the community.
We need you to:
* sign up for updates on https://saveoceanpark.ca/
* continue to send emails to all city councilors and mayor including mayoral candidates
* spread the word and get everyone to sign the petition (2600 residents signed so far)
Sincerely
The Ocean Park Alliance
