Stop Herbicide Spraying Near Homes in Valley Lake, Keilor East

Stop Herbicide Spraying Near Homes in Valley Lake, Keilor East
The issue
Last year, during the Moonee Valley City Council’s routine herbicide spraying along and around the rock face in Valley Lake, I experienced the harmful effects firsthand. Living at Lakeside Crescent, Keilor East, my home and backyard garden were directly exposed to the chemicals used. Within days, my homegrown herbs and vegetables - cultivated without chemical interference - were completely destroyed.
More alarmingly, I was outside at the time and was physically covered in chemical spray drift. The drone was not flying directly above my property, yet the drift reached me and my garden. This highlights the serious risk of off-target exposure for anyone living nearby during spraying operations.
This was not an isolated incident. I have documented evidence, including photos and video footage, showing the extent of the damage. Several neighbours have reported similar outcomes. The repercussions of these poisonous chemical sprays go far beyond plant damage - they pose serious health risks to the children, pets, and families who live and play in these spaces every day.
Despite raising these concerns with the Moonee Valley City Council, my core question remains unanswered:
Can MVCC guarantee that no chemical drift will occur?
The health and safety of residents must be the highest priority. At this stage, I have not received clear reassurance that the proposed drone-based spraying will prevent off-target exposure. If the MVCC intends to proceed, the following must be addressed:
- How will council monitor and verify that no chemical drift has occurred during or after application?
- What independent oversight or environmental monitoring will be in place?
- What recourse will be offered to residents in the event of exposure, harm, or environmental impact?
Until these critical questions are answered transparently and comprehensively, we cannot support the continuation of herbicide spraying near residential properties.
Chemical herbicides such as glyphosate, are poisons which are known to cause skin and respiratory irritation and have been banned in countries like Germany and Belgium due to their risks. These substances also contaminate soil and water systems, disrupting ecosystems and biodiversity.
We call on Moonee Valley City Council to:
- Immediately halt all herbicide spraying near homes.
- Adopt safer, non-toxic alternatives such as manual weed removal and organic herbicides.
- Prioritise the health of residents and the protection of the local environment.
By signing this petition, you are standing with your community in demanding a safer, healthier, and more sustainable approach. Let’s work together to protect our homes, our children, and our future.
