Stop HB281 Amendments: Preserve Confidentiality in School Therapy

The Issue

As someone who has personally navigated the turbulent waters of mental health struggles, I know firsthand the crucial role a school therapist can play. My journey through suicide ideation and the challenges of anxiety, depression, and ADHD has been made bearable thanks to the confidential support I received from my school's therapist. It is a resource that must not be undermined.

House Bill 281/Senate Bill 2 Amendment 2, specifically Section 53G-9-901 intends to destabilize this system, placing control over the topics of these critical conversations in the hands of parents. While parental involvement is necessary in many facets of a child's education, demanding control over therapeutic exchanges infringes upon the student's freedom of speech and could lead to severe consequences such as depression, or worse suicide.

An increase in rates of suicide and depression among youths is a realistic outcome due to this bill. In fact, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people between 10 to 24. Taking a step backwards by limiting the effectiveness of school therapy may lead to an escalation of this already alarming statistic.

Our students deserve a safe space. Their voices must be heard, their experiences validated, and their struggles acknowledged without censorship. We cannot afford to ignore the silent cries for help that may be stifled by House Bill 281/Senate Bill 2 Amendment 2, Section 53G-9-901.

We urge you to reconsider this course of action. Protect student's rights to uncensored school therapy, and stand against House Bill 281/Senate Bill 2 Amendment 2, Section 53G-9-901. Please, sign this petition, contact your senator, contact Governor Cox and let our voices echo in the ears of those who can make a difference.
