Stop hazardous waste dumping in Quinton
The Issue
Protect Quinton, Woodgate Valley and Bartley Green from Illegal Waste Dumping and Overgrown Fire Hazards
To: Birmingham City Council
From: Residents of Quinton
For the past two years, residents of Quinton and Woodgate Valley have been living under the constant threat of a growing and dangerous problem illegal and hazardous waste dumping in our alleyways and access routes leading into Woodgate Valley Country Park. These are not small bits of litter they are large piles of flammable, dangerous waste accumulating behind our homes and along public pathways.
If even one of these piles were to ignite, the consequences would be catastrophic. Fire could spread rapidly from house to house, through our alleyways, and into Woodgate Valley a cherished natural landscape that our community relies on for recreation, wellbeing, and environmental value. Our homes and green spaces are being placed at unacceptable risk due to ongoing neglect and lack of intervention especially as the country is experiencing our hottest summer on record and have already had a fire in Quinton recently and Woodgate Valley Park.
In addition to illegal dumping, the green land surrounding our homes and the pathways into Woodgate Valley has become severely overgrown. Shrubbery, brambles, and dried vegetation have been left unmanaged for long periods, creating dense, dry, highly flammable conditions.
Recent fires in Woodgate Valley have already demonstrated how vulnerable this area is. Without regular cutting, clearing, and vegetation control, the risk of a major fire remains dangerously high.
Residents have repeatedly reported these hazards, yet meaningful action has not been taken.
We, the undersigned, call for immediate action.
We demand Birmingham City Council implement the following measures without delay:
. Regular and frequent clean‑ups of alleyways, footpaths, and access routes not one‑off clearances.
. Consistent monitoring and enforcement to prevent further illegal dumping.
. Installation of CCTV cameras in strategic hotspots to deter offenders and identify perpetrators.
. Clear signage outlining the legal consequences of illegal waste disposal.
. Routine cutting back of overgrown vegetation, shrubbery, brambles, and unmanaged green land.
. Scheduled spraying and maintenance to prevent regrowth and reduce fire risk.
. Environmental and safety awareness campaigns to educate residents and promote community responsibility.
. Transparency and accountability regarding maintenance schedules, enforcement actions, and response times.
These actions are feasible, necessary, and urgent. Our homes, families, and the natural beauty of Woodgate Valley must be protected before disaster strikes.
We urge Birmingham City Council to take this threat seriously and act now.
Quinton deserve to be safe, clean, and properly maintained. We ask all residents, visitors, and supporters to stand with us.
