The Issue

Over the past decade, local councils have been rolling out the installation of bright white LED streetlights, replacing the old high-pressure sodium streetlights, which were characterized by a warm amber glow. These LED lights are typically produced with a blindingly bluish hint, starkly contrasting with the warm glow its amber predecessor offered and indirectly harming humans and wildlife alike.

The new LED street lights are highly uncomfortable on the eye, and scientific research suggests that its exposure (4000w) can inflict irreparable damage to our eye's retina due to it being so blue and so bright. Humans and animals alike have circadian rhythms that are being disturbed by these lights as exposure to blue hue can suppress the production of sleep-inducing hormone melatonin, the consequences of this being detrimental on the psychological wellbeingofn both humans and animals alike.

These new lights are said to be more energy efficient as they can last up to 200,000 hours. The production and installation of these street lights however are costly. This means after their installation, communities can expect to be stuck with the street lights for around a decade as it is not economically convenient to change them. This petition calls for action to implement a warmer more yellow tone of LED lighting to bring back the comfort of night time, when these lights eventually die.
