Stop harassment by selective parking fines in South Mumbai
The Issue
As an 80-year-old senior citizen recovering from an open-heart surgery, I find myself in a predicament that resonates with many in South Mumbai. A few days ago, I was fined outside H N Reliance Hospital while trying to alight from my vehicle with the assistance of my driver. Despite my compromised health, I became the target of unwarranted scrutiny by police constables armed with instant cameras, who seem to selectively enforce parking rules.
Yesterday was no different. My son and I faced a similar scenario outside Maker Arcade. He had briefly stopped at a pharmacy in Cuffe Parade where there was no visible "No Parking" sign and minimal traffic. Yet again, a fine was issued. These incidents are not isolated but part of a worrying trend affecting countless residents and visitors in the areas surrounding Flora Fountain, the City Civil Court, Nariman Point, and J G Bhosle Marg.
The selective nature of how these cameras are used is not just a personal inconvenience but a broader issue undermining the trust and safety of all South Mumbai citizens. While we recognize the need for traffic control and enforcement, random fining when no obstructions are caused or signs violated is excessive and unfair.
We propose a fair and transparent solution. The implementation of clear and visible "No Parking" signs in critical areas would provide clarity for vehicle owners. Furthermore, police constables should be equipped with body cameras or similar accountability measures to ensure unbiased enforcement of the law. Additionally, special considerations should be made for senior citizens and those with medical conditions, allowing for reasonable time and actions, such as alighting from a vehicle.
It’s high time we address this selective enforcement, ensuring it doesn't become a harassment tool but a fair practice for South Mumbai's residents and visitors. This issue deserves immediate attention from our local authorities to restore equity and prevent undue stress on our daily lives.
