Stop harassment and mistreatment of transgender students in Florida
The Issue
As a transgender female and a sophomore in Orlando, Florida, my daily life at school is fraught with harassment and discrimination. I am constantly misgendered and subjected to verbal abuse by students and teachers alike. This isn't just my struggle — it's a widespread issue affecting many transgender youths across Florida.
Transgender children deserve to learn in a safe and supportive environment, but unfortunately, the current situation in Florida is anything but that. According to a 2021 survey by The Trevor Project, 42% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide, with rates far higher in environments without affirming support for transgender identities. The effects of harassment and discrimination are profound and life-altering.
Currently, laws in Florida have made it even more challenging for transgender students by failing to protect them against discrimination and by mandating policies that enable mistreatment. For example, legislation stopping transgender students from using bathrooms aligned with their gender identity only exacerbates their daily challenges and increases alienation and abuse.
We need immediate and decisive action to change this narrative. We must implement mandatory sensitivity and awareness training for all school staff and faculty about transgender issues. There must be clear guidelines and protections in place for transgender students' rights, including their pronouns and names long before being implemented. Schools should enforce stringent anti-bullying policies that specifically address harassment based on gender identity.
Support for transgender youths in schools is not only a matter of fairness but a critical protective factor for their mental health and overall well-being. Every child deserves respect and equal opportunity to flourish in their educational journey.
By signing this petition, you join a growing group of advocates demanding that Florida's educational system create a climate of respect and dignity for transgender students. Stand with us to urge legislators and school boards to enact and enforce policies that protect transgender students from discrimination and harassment. Change begins with awareness, and together we can create a safer, more inclusive environment for all students. I also want to speak to higher ups Such as The Superintendent:
Dr. Maria F. Vazquez and potentially Senator LaVon Bracy Davis
and Senator Carlos Guillermo Smith.
