Stop Gun Violence

Stop Gun Violence

The Issue

I have recently lost a cousin to gun violence, she was out with family when she was caught in the crossfire of a shooting. The girl’s name was Da'Mia and though we weren't very close,

she was still my cousin and I mourned her death. Since the beginning of 2023, several mass shootings and gun-related incidents have occurred in America. Many have died and many more were injured due to the lack of gun control. My team and I have been trying to figure out how to limit gun-related deaths and injuries. We have come to the conclusion that one of the solutions is to put heavier restrictions on guns.

Ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines
If Congress is unable to ban assault weapons, it should raise the purchase age to 21 years old.
Restrict who can purchase and own particular firearms.

Eliminate gun manufacturers' immunity from liability.
Address the mental health crisis
Anyone interested in purchasing or owning a particular kind of firearm is subjected to mental health assessments.

In the United States, where gun ownership is protected by the Constitution but where murders (including mass murders) are extremely common, gun control is more contentious than anywhere else in the world; Among developed nations, the rate of homicides committed with firearms is by far the highest in the United States. In the United States, proponents of tighter gun control argue that restricting gun ownership will reduce crime and save lives; The opposition contends that it would actually prevent law-abiding citizens from self-defense against armed criminals. The vast majority of gun-related mass murders in the United States are ignored by mainstream media outlets due to their frequency. The killing of 49 people in a nightclub in Orlando in 2016 and the massacre of 20 children and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012, both of which attracted national attention, typically sparked a brief and fruitless discussion regarding the necessity of tighter gun control. Fearing retaliation from the National Rifle Association (NRA), politicians from both major parties solemnly offer their "thoughts and prayers" while refusing to enact reasonable and constitutional measures like expanded background checks for gun purchases and the reinstatement of a federal ban on assault weapons that Congress allowed to lapse in 2004. Both of these measures are now favored by the majority of Americans.
