Petition: Growing up in the Finger Lakes region, I've seen firsthand the natural beauty and peacefulness that is unique to this area. The gorgeous landscapes, thriving ecosystems, and pristine waters of the Finger Lakes have always been more than just scenery – they are a vital part of our local community. However, our treasured environment is now under threat as Greenidge Generation plans to expand their facility into a full-scale data center. The transformation of Greenidge Bitcoin mining operation into a data center poses significant environmental risks that could irreversibly damage Seneca Lake and the surrounding areas. Data centers require vast amounts of energy to operate, contributing to increases in carbon emissions and exacerbating climate change. Not only does a transition to a data center threaten to compromise air quality through increased emissions, but it also endangers the aquatic life and overall health of Seneca Lake due to potential thermal and chemical pollution. The discharge of heated water from cooling processes could disrupt the delicate balance of local ecosystems and harm sensitive fish populations. Water usage by these data centers is staggering. With facilities consuming millions of gallons of water per day for cooling purposes, this could lead to a significant depletion of water. Also, wastewater discharged can lead to industrial waste contamination in Seneca Lake .  We cannot afford to risk the health of our precious waters. There is still time to protect our environment and preserve the natural beauty that defines our community. By stopping Greenidge from turning into a data center, we can prevent further ecological degradation and safeguard Seneca Lake for future generations. We urge the local officials and regulatory bodies to take quick action against this harmful expansion and prioritize the community over corporate interests.
