I am a relative of the family who has possessed the home at 1802 Columbia Pike in Arlington, Virginia, for more than 70 years; the land even longer. My cousins inherited this home from their parents and in January 2021, a gas leak occurred, ultimately taking the life of my cousin and incapacitating her sister, the current owner.

Arlington County is trying to capitalize off of this tragedy and have made several underhanded attempts to steal this property. While there are alternative solutions to improve public safety, including the original plan, they are targeting this home, threatening eminent domain and condemnation, in the disguise of a minor road project as a public safety issue.

The County is playing dirty due to poor planning and an accelerated schedule.   They have no regard for the sentimental value of the home, the many sacrifices the original owners made to acquire and retain it, or the future generational wealth it offers the next generation. Shame on Arlington County for its underhanded attempts to steal this family home!

Eminent domain should not be used as a tool to displace families who have deep historical and emotional ties to their property. This misuse of power threatens not only our family's legacy but also undermines trust in local governance.
