Stop Gov. Landry’s Law to Enforce Religion & Ban Gender Talk in Schools

The Issue

As a teacher who has been providing education to students coming from various backgrounds, I have witnessed the harm that befalls students when their individuality is denied. This brings me to urge you all to join hands to stop Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry from enforcing two concerning bills within our school system.

Firstly, the bill to display the Ten Commandments in state-funded schools: This proposal infringes upon the United States Constitution, directly contradicting the Establishment Clause that prohibits governmental endorsement of religion. It also dismisses the diverse range of religious and cultural beliefs our students hold and instills a singular religious viewpoint.

Secondly, the prohibition of discussion regarding gender identity and sexual orientation in schools: The proposed bill directly violates the freedom of speech and forbids students and educators from meaningful dialogues that are crucial for building understanding, empathy and inclusivity. By stifling these discussions, we may unintentionally harm students who rely on schools as safe spaces to explore and affirm their identity.

Through these bills, our Governor not only denies the diversity in our classrooms but also undermines our students' constitutional rights. We implore all who value the importance of individuality and diversity in education to raise their voices against these bills. Please, sign this petition and contact your state legislator (https://www.legis.la.gov/Legis/FindMyLegislators.aspx to stop the enforcement of these unconstitutional and harmful mandates in our schools.
