Stop GoGuardian's Invasion of Privacy in South Haven, MI Schools!
The Issue
As a concerned student of a school that utilizes GoGuardian, I am deeply troubled by the invasive practices employed by this software. It is alarming to learn that GoGuardian can access our screens, open our cameras, record through our microphones, and even prevent us from deleting our search history. These actions not only violate our fundamental right to privacy but also potentially expose us to serious legal consequences. It also cause anxiety within students knowing that nothing they do is privite and they are constently being watched.
Invasion of privacy is considered a class 2 misdemeanor under Michigan law and can result in fines up to $1,000 or imprisonment for up to 60 days. It is unacceptable that such an intrusive tool is being used without proper consideration for the rights and well-being of students.
Let's consider the scale of this issue. With over 14,000 schools using GoGuardian nationwide and an average of 526 students per public school in the United States (source: National Center for Education Statistics), we estimate that approximately 7,364,000 students are affected by these invasive practices. This number could be even higher considering there are more than 14,000 schools utilizing this software.
Furthermore, it is disheartening to discover that GoGuardian boasts a net worth of $1 billion while potentially compromising the privacy and security of millions of students across the country. If every student or at least most of them were to report their concerns about these violations, it would undoubtedly have a significant impact on GoGuardian's reputation and operations.
We firmly believe that no student should have their personal information exposed or their privacy violated while pursuing education online. We demand immediate action from both South Haven School District and GoGuardian:
1. Cease all invasive practices immediately: We call upon South Haven School District administrators to disable any features within GoGuardian that infringe upon students' privacy rights.
2. Transparent policies and consent: South Haven School District must establish clear guidelines regarding the use of GoGuardian, ensuring that students and their parents or guardians are fully informed about the extent of monitoring and provide explicit consent before any invasive measures are implemented.
3. Accountability and oversight: We urge South Haven School District to conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with privacy laws, as well as appoint an independent committee (With Students In it) responsible for overseeing the implementation of monitoring software in schools. Like restrictions and and flags.
By signing this petition, we demand that our voices be heard and our rights protected. Let us stand together against this invasion of privacy in South Haven, MI schools. Together, we can create a safer educational environment where students' privacy is respected.
Note: This petition is personal to me because I attend a school that utilizes GoGuardian. I have witnessed firsthand the discomfort and anxiety caused by these invasive practices. It is crucial that we take action now to safeguard our rights and protect future generations from such violations.
