Stop glyphosate use in the Blue Mountains, NSW
The issue
As a concerned resident of the Blue Mountains, NSW, I am deeply troubled by the continued use of Glyphosate, commonly known by its commercial name Roundup, in our beautiful and precious environment. My worries are not unfounded. Across the globe, countries have been recognizing the adverse impacts of this chemical over the past decade, some banning its use due to overwhelming evidence of its environmental harm and potential links to cancer.
Glyphosate, an active ingredient in many weed killers including the widely used Roundup, is a powerful herbicide. However, its aggressive nature extends beyond weeds, infiltrating the soil and waterways, endangering the intricate ecosystems that thrive within the Blue Mountains, a World Heritage site. Some studies have indicated that Glyphosate residues can disturb the delicate balance of flora and fauna, threaten biodiversity, and contaminate the water sources that both wildlife and humans rely on.
Furthermore, a growing body of scientific research suggests that prolonged exposure to Glyphosate is associated with an increased risk of cancer, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has identified Glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen, raising alarms about the safety of those who are exposed regularly, particularly members of our community who live close to areas where it is extensively sprayed.
Despite these concerns, Glyphosate usage persists in the Blue Mountains, putting the health of residents, tourists, and the environment at risk. Other countries have taken decisive action against this chemical. For example, in 2019, Austria became the first EU country to ban all uses of Glyphosate, citing health and environmental risks.
We must urge the local government and environmental agencies to recognize the potential dangers and adopt safer, non-toxic alternatives to managing weeds. Methods such as manual removal, hot water foam treatments, and organic herbicides have proven successful in both preserving ecosystems and protecting public health.
Please join me in calling for a ban on Glyphosate in the Blue Mountains and advocate for the implementation of these safer alternatives. Let us protect our community and the invaluable natural heritage of NSW by signing this petition.
