The Issue

My home resides in a small village situated within the biodiversity hotspot of the Western Ghats, in Maharashtra. Each passing year, our community witnesses tragic horrors of forest fires. These disastrous fires, often adjacent to our farms, claim the lives of countless organisms and cause irreparable damage to our flora and fauna. Unique birds such as peacocks, precious reptiles, and the vibrant monkeys indigenous to our forests lose their lives in these preventable catastrophes. Millions of plants, from towering trees to undergrowth, are mercilessly burnt down.

This is not a distant problem; it's our reality here in India and other parts of South Asia. Devastatingly, such activities are driving numerous species to extinction and upsetting our delicate ecological balance. The Western Ghats alone is home to about 325 globally threatened species as declared by the IUCN Red List (International Union for Conservation of Nature).

It is both our responsibility and our necessity to put an end to such incidents. We demand stricter regulations and enforcement against activities leading to forest fires. We also urge the governments at all levels to invest in fire management strategies and to provide support to local communities, like ours, in their efforts to protect the region’s biodiversity.

If we fail to act, we risk losing not just our home, but a global treasure. So I urge you, for us and for the future generations, please sign this petition to help end forest fires in South Asia, and together, let's ensure the survival of countless species and the preservation of our planet's biological diversity.
