Petition updateStop Forcing Mail-Order Pharmacy as the Only Option of CoverageFine Those Who Force Mail-Order Pharmacy & Cause Life-Threatening Delays at No Fault of The Patient

Yesterday, I spoke with emergency hospital staff about issues with mail-order pharmacy.  They said, "We see patients in here all the time due to medications not arriving on time and patients facing life-threatening delays due to medications not arriving in time." A transplant nurse said that it happens frequently with her transplant patients too and she often doesn't have time that it takes to fight with all of the issues with mail-order pharmacies. She sends off the prescription and they'll say more than once that they didn't receive it. It takes multiple faxes. Patients then have to wait for 5-7 days for processing and to receive the medication that in the past patients would have in 30 minutes.

Can anyone tell me how this makes sense? How is this convenient? How is this saving us money? I'm heartbroken as every week I see MS patients have conditions worsen, cancer patients see delays and interruptions in their treatments, some diabetics rationing insulin, transplant patients going without medications, and my list could go on.  Keep in mind transplant medications must be taken every 12 hours to keep the patient from rejecting their transplanted organ.

I will continue to fight to ensure that mail-order pharmacy is not forced or heavily incentivized. In the meantime, each time when a patient has a life-threatening delay due to forced mail-order pharmacy, the PBM who is the insurance company's pharmacy benefit manager who restricts access to their mail-order pharmacy should be heavily fined. Fines should also be charged each time their delay lands patients in the hospital and every day that these patients are going without their medications. The PBM who restricts patients access to their trusted pharmacy should be 100% responsible for any additional charges patients occur.

Patients may sometimes offer a 7-day emergency fill at the local pharmacy. Where will patients receive 7-day emergency fills as our independent pharmacies close rapidly due to limited patient access and coverage to their local pharmacies. The same PBM (pharmacy benefits manager) that forces us to their mail-order oversees reimbursements and access. They reimburse our pharmacist poorly or removes all coverage to our pharmacist for some medications. This is causing many of our community pharmacies to close their doors.

Insurance companys' pharmacy benefit managers are hoping that we are all sleeping at the wheel.  Lets show them that we are far from sleeping.

Forced mail-order pharmacy is hurting our communities and the lives of many.  Mail-order pharmacy could be an option but never forced.

Please sign the petition and share if you agree!

Thank you,
