First to the supporters (our heroes), and the reason why this common sense issue will get addressed.
I have possibly good news (pending results)!
I contacted the State Board of Pharmacy, and they said that the email received Saturday from the State Board of Pharmacy stating that they found "No violation of the Pharmacy Practice Act" was sent in error!
It's ok to make mistakes, and I won't be upset or hold it against Governor Parson or the State Board of Pharmacy. I'm begging, because many can only use mail order pharmacy for coverage of lifesaving medications; please make sure that all medications are kept in the temperature ranges proven safe by the manufacturer during shipping.
If medications are shipped in plastic bags outside of the temperature ranges proven safe, warn patients that medications could have lost potency, especially in the months when the back of the delivery trucks and mailboxes turns into mini-ovens (up to 170 degrees) or in the extreme cold. In my state alone there are over 100 freezing or below freezing days per year. Again, refrigerated medications are shipped in big thick coolers with ice packs, but room temperature medications matter also.
To our pharmaceutical coverage/PBM (pharmacy benefits manager 80-85% chance that a patient's PBM is CVS, Optum RX, Express Scripts) who often only allow coverage to their owned mail-order pharmacies or retail pharmacy, please know that removing ALL coverage of the face to face relationship that we have had with our pharmacist for years and replacing this relationship with the mailman, a hot and freezing truck, and a plastic bag has real-life consequences. It doesn't make common sense.
For this reason, mail order pharmacy should be an option and not forced.
Patients should not be steered by the PBM to only use the PBM owned mail order pharmacy/retail by offering a lower copayment. When we visit our local pharmacies, our local pharmacist demonstrations how to use complex medications, keeps our medications within temperature ranges proven safe, and gets to know our personal socioeconomic barriers that can interfere with pharmaceutical treatment. They should have an equal copayment and be reimbursed the same as the PBM reimburses their own pharmacies.
Incentivizing patients with lower copays for removing the crucial face to face relationship, taking the risk of medications losing ANY potency, delays, or medications getting stolen just doesn't make me feel like patients best interest is in mind.
Dear regulators, let's rethink and please fix this.
Thank you,
Loretta Boesing
