The doctor in this news report states medications can lose up to 75% potency in high temperatures. Yet, medications are shipped in plastic bags/bubble mailers every day with nothing to protect them. Many Americans are forced to only use this method to receive their medications. We don't even receive a warning from the mail order pharmacy that would alarm us that the medication that just came off of a hot enclosed UPS truck, US Post Office vehicle, or Fed Ex Truck should be discarded as it could be weakened. Discarding the medications is what the manufacturer would most often suggest when exposed to extreme temperatures. Medications are often exposed to freezing temperatures or temperatures that exceed 130-180 degrees (these vehicles are not air conditioned/heated). Sadly, we just assume they wouldn't do it if it wasn't safe. We were wrong! ALL medications have temperature storage guidelines. Most are not to be stored above 86 degrees or in freezing temperatures.
Thank you to every single one of you who are supporting this! I appreciate your hard work and continued effort in helping to ensure that all medications will be protected way the manufacturer has tested and proven safe and that we will certainly have the option to keep our local independent pharmacist who would never allow our medications to be handled like this.
