The United States is engaging in a distressing experiment on transgender prisoners. Well-intentioned or not, these actions involve dangerous and traumatic practices of forced detransition. This includes replacing hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with antidepressants and "talk therapy," confiscating gender-affirming items, and forcing individuals to "become cisgender" to be eligible for bail. This tragedy originated in Florida under the leadership of Ron DeSantis and has begun spreading throughout the nation, raising urgent concerns about human rights abuses within the prison system.

Transgender individuals in prisons are already among the most vulnerable populations, facing discrimination, violence, and a lack of appropriate healthcare. Forcing them to detransition not only violates their personal rights and freedoms but also poses significant health risks, both mentally and physically. According to the American Medical Association, gender-affirming care is a safe and effective treatment option and should not be withheld from those who need it.

The United Nations has recognized access to gender-affirming care as a human right, yet transgender prisoners are being denied this right. Instead, they are subjected to psychological torment and forced to conform to an identity that does not align with their true selves. This practice is not only ethically and morally wrong but also legally questionable under human rights laws.
