Stop food businesses from charging extra for allergy adaptations
The Issue
My friend has food allergies, and every time we dine out, the additional costs for her to have a safe meal are frustratingly apparent. Whether it's choosing an alternative milk or requesting gluten-free bread, these necessary dietary adaptations often come with a noticeable increase in price. This practice is not only unfair but also discriminatory against those who have no choice but to adhere to specific dietary requirements for their health. Having a safe alternative option available at no extra cost can be the difference between dining safely and risking an allergic reaction which could become fatal or make someone very unwell.
Across the UK, millions of individuals suffer from food allergies or intolerances. According to Allergy UK, around two million people are diagnosed with a food allergy, and over 10% of adults experience some form of food intolerance. For them, safe consumption of food is a necessity, not a luxury that warrants additional surcharges. The financial burden on allergy sufferers continues to magnify as more eateries impose these unnecessary charges, creating a disparity in access to enjoyable and safe dining experiences.
Current UK legislation requires businesses to provide information on allergens present in their food. Yet, there is no regulation on the costs associated with making these adaptations, giving businesses the autonomy to charge premium prices for basic substitutions. This practice needs to be challenged and reformed to ensure fair treatment of all consumers.
One viable solution is for businesses to absorb the extra costs of allergy adaptations as part of their standard offerings, much like how they accommodate various tastes and preferences without charging extra. Restaurants and cafes could build these costs into their overall menu pricing strategies, effectively spreading the financial impact and ensuring no single customer is unfairly charged due to health reasons.
Moreover, government bodies such as the Food Standards Agency should take an active role in monitoring and regulating these practices to promote fair pricing policies in the food industry. By standardizing these adaptations across establishments, businesses can become more inclusive and equitable, allowing everyone to enjoy dining out without the worry of inflated costs.
We urge policymakers, restaurant owners, and food industry leaders to recognize the importance of equal treatment for those with food allergies. Fair and accessible dining should be a universal right and not a privilege.
Please join us in demanding that food businesses stop imposing extra charges for allergy adaptations. Sign this petition to help foster a more inclusive and equitable food industry for all.
