Success!
Hello, everybody, a quick update on the results of the township meeting last week: the zoning ordinance passed!! This is one small step toward sanity and it absolutely would never have happened if it hadn't been for the community members that got together last summer, and worked for months with the LM Commissioners to write a bill that limits the places in LM township where gun shops can be situated. Special thanks to Joe Oxman who drafted the language and helped facilitate the process, Maria Wells that facilitated community dialogue with Gilda Kramer, along with Linda Breitstein, Michael Matza, Linda Finkelstein and so, SO many others that helped to keep the community informed about and engaged with the process.
There were about 15 people who came to support the passage, and other that wrote in, speaking passionately about the need to protect our children and prevent gun violence.
The vote to pass the ordinance was unanimous. The new law limits the areas in LM township where gun shops can exist. There were no limits before, now there is only 5% of the township that is available for sales. Also, the bill includes common sense provisions about background checks and about requirements for smash-proof glass and alarm systems for such shops. (to prevent people from breaking in and stealing guns, which does happen).
This is a great step forward to Lower Merion and an important step in the path for reducing gun violence in our larger, PA community. WHYY picked up the story last week, and from what we’re hearing it will likely go national over the course of this week, so stay tune for further updates.
Congratulation on a job well done and kudos for all of your hard work one and all!
