The Issue

The Gambia is trying to overturn the ban on female genital mutilation (FGM) in 2026, which could lead to the horrific practice being inflicted on girls as young as three.

This practice is brutal, inhumane, and violates the fundamental rights of children. Female genital mutilation causes severe physical pain, psychological trauma, and a wide array of health complications, including infections, chronic pain, and increased risks during childbirth. Globally, over 200 million women and girls have been affected by FGM, according to the World Health Organization. It is a violation of human rights and is internationally recognized as a harmful practice that should be eradicated.

In 2015, The Gambia took a significant step forward by banning FGM, marking a victory for women's rights and a commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of girls and women in the country. Overturning this ban would not only reverse years of progress but would also endanger the futures of countless young girls, subjecting them to a life of suffering and discrimination.

It is crucial to preserve the safety and dignity of all girls. The Gambian government should focus on reinforcing and implementing laws that protect vulnerable populations rather than repealing them for regressive measures.

We urge international bodies, human rights organizations, and the global community to speak out against this attempt to repeal the ban and to support The Gambia in its continued fight against FGM. Sustainable education and advocacy programs should be bolstered, emphasizing awareness and cultural sensitivity, to eradicate this practice once and for all.

Our children deserve a future free from fear and free from harm. Stand with us in urging the Gambian authorities to keep the ban on female genital mutilation intact. Let's ensure that the rights and health of Gambian girls are protected.

Please sign this petition to make your voice heard and protect the innocent lives of girls who deserve to grow up without the threat of mutilation.
