The Issue

I am a member of Felician University's Swim Team, and swimming is not just a sport for me; it's a life-changing experience. The friendships I have forged and the discipline I have gained through swimming are invaluable. But now, Felician University has made the shocking announcement to shut down both the Men’s and Women’s Swim Teams, citing "financial reasons." This decision is not justifiable, as it overlooks the positive impact and potential future losses for both students and the university.

In recent years, competitive college swimming has shown numerous benefits, from enhancing students' physical health to improving their mental well-being and academic performance. The students who participate in swimming, like myself and my friends, dedicate countless hours to training, balancing academics, and excelling in both areas. This decision to eliminate the teams threatens to destroy a program that supports the growth and success of so many student-athletes.

Additionally, college swim teams contribute positively to the university's reputation. Success in sports can significantly enhance institutional visibility, attracting future students, creating school pride, and building an engaged alumni network. An action that dismantles athletics could deter prospective students, leading to a potential drop in enrollment. A “financial reason" that seems counterproductive.

Financial constraints are a reality, yes, but cutting the swim teams shouldn't be the go-to solution. Alternative measures such as seeking alumni support, campaigning for community fundraising, or financial restructuring could better address these challenges while preserving the swim teams. Let's explore creative financial solutions, advocating for alumni and community engagement that aim to cover the necessary costs without stripping students of opportunities.

Felician University must prioritize its students and the holistic development they experience through athletics. Join us in urging the university to rescind this decision and consider more sustainable financial alternatives that do not compromise the educational and athletic pursuits of its students.

Sign this petition to show your support for saving the Men’s and Women’s Swim Teams at Felician University. Together, let's make a change for the betterment of current and future students who dream of swimming competitively at the collegiate level.
