State Government hides what it is trying to do, and you ask your Council for support - but it is No

Letter of Objection : Department of Planning and Transport and Kew Council
Ministerial Planning Permit: PA2604213
Leo’s Supermarket site + 32-36 Princess Street + 11-15 Brougham Street KEW
Change org petition : 530 amazing people
I am beyond grateful and appreciative for everyone’s support of our petition to protect our rights and community and the wider implications for more communities and Victoria.
Our Letter of Objection : submitted and receipt acknowledged by the Department of Planning & Transport (April 5th) has not been replied to – time to write to the Minister again
Our objections and concerns have been highlighted by an article in The Age on Sunday May 10th, on Page 3.
Headline : ‘Bulldozed’ : Kew residents fight 18-storey tower that exceeds new height limits.
If you read it and agree, please support and highlight it.
Our objections and concerns have been highlighted by the Channel 9 News on Sunday night May 10th, at 6pm.
If you watch it and agree, please support and highlight it.
Thank you to all the people who have reached out and offered your various expertise.
Today’s photos highlight the overshadowing from this mega development onto us.
Photo 1 : winter solstice - High Street homes and are up to War Memorial in complete shade at 4.00pm
Photo 2 : summer solstice - Princess Street homes and area in complete shade at 7.00am
It must be a NO to the mega shadows created in all directions, and in particular all the way up High Street and plunging the War Memorial in darkness.
Next will be a proper and competent traffic assessment.
We asked our Council, our elected representatives to support us the residents and protect us from this mega development and mega government overreach – we need them to keep us safe and well – it is a no from Council.
From our Kew Council Urban Planning Team:
KEW JUNCTION ACTIVITY CENTRE CORE BUILT FORM
What we understand about the place and how we’ve addressed it :
Kew Junction is loved for its heritage buildings and reputation as a retail and hospitality destination. The Community Reference Group noted the importance of respecting Kew Junction’s unique character, protecting green space and keeping Kew Junction walkable, safe and accessible. That is why we have planned for Heritage Main Street typology application in heritage precincts and sun protection on High Street, the Kew War Memorial and Alexandra Gardens.
We heard that the community is generally supportive of higher growth immediately surrounding the junction, development that respects the heritage buildings and high quality buildings. “[The Program should] balance between height, heritage and protecting the qualities of the High Street strip shopping centre and access to sunlight”– Kew Council Community Reference Group.
As a community, we deeply value the distinctive qualities that make the Kew Activity Centre a special and cherished place. Kew is not only a functional hub for daily life, but also a suburb with a strong sense of identity, shaped by its people, history, and environment. The following points capture what makes this place unique and worthy of protection:
A Welcoming and Community-Focused Character
Significant Landmarks and Built Heritage
Connection to Green Spaces and Natural Beauty
Movement and Accessibility in Public Spaces
Our Kew Council has failed us and themselves in their own Statement of Advice for Kew Junction.
If you want to see our Kew Council debate the Kew Village development, it is available on YouTube. Urban Planning Delegated Committee Meeting - 20 April 2026 - YouTube
From our Mayor : Cr Wes Gault :
“throwing shadows not across residential properties but a traffic intersection” ( wrong ! )
“supportive of it”
“ extremely high calibre design”
“lock it in and make sure it happens for Boroondara”
· No mention of all the really important issues raised by his residents, especially traffic and safety.
Cr Sophie Torney our Studley Ward representative :
“ Support housing in Kew “
“ Design has merit – very fortunate we have a John Wardle design coming to Kew “
“ We should be the decision maker in our community “
· No mention of all the really important issues raised by his residents, especially traffic and safety.
Kew Council decision :
· “ Motion Carried “ for Kew Village
The State Government is “bulldozing” Kew with this overdevelopment in Kew Junction.
Working in the shadows and with no transparency.
Who are they working with, it is not the local Kew Council or the residents of Kew.
