Stop Family-Introduced Underage Drinking

Stop Family-Introduced Underage Drinking
The Issue
I am creating this petition because I have witnessed firsthand the negative impact of family-introduced underage drinking. My loved one was given a “small taste” of alcohol by a close relative, and I have also had friends who engaged in drinking at a young age. Seeing this has made me deeply concerned about the long-term effects this can have on young people. Studies show that children who start drinking early are more likely to develop alcohol dependency, face academic challenges, and engage in risky behaviors.
No child should be encouraged to drink by those they trust most. Family guidance is crucial in shaping healthy habits, and giving alcohol to minors sends the wrong message, normalizing behavior that can harm their future.
Underage drinking is a widespread issue, and shockingly, it’s often introduced by the people children trust most , their own family. Many believe “just a small taste” is harmless, but it actually normalizes drinking and ignores serious consequences. Research shows it increases the risk of accidents, aggression, poor academics, and long-term health problems.
In South Africa, underage drinking is a significant issue. According to the South African Youth Risk Behaviour Survey, 25.1% of Grade 8–11 learners had drunk five or more drinks of alcohol within a few hours on one or more days in the month preceding the survey . Additionally, a 2014 study by the Human Sciences Research Council found that 30% of South Africans aged 16 and older consumed alcohol .
The consequences are dire. In 2022, the Enyobeni Tavern disaster in East London tragically claimed the lives of 21 young people, aged between 13 and 17, during a celebration where alcohol was reportedly served to minors . Furthermore, alcohol-related deaths among youth are alarmingly high, with 80% of male youth deaths in South Africa being alcohol-related .
We need stronger awareness and education. Parents and guardians must understand the legal and health risks, and schools should include alcohol education in their curriculum to counter media messages that glamorize drinking.
Let’s protect our youth by refusing to normalize underage drinking.
