Stop Falmouth University from promoting pro-AI views

Stop Falmouth University from promoting pro-AI views
The Issue
I am a student at Falmouth University, an institution renowned for its focus on creativity, offering courses in games, art, film, writing, and various other fields. The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), however, poses a significant threat to these disciplines, as AI technology may replace many creative roles that are essential to our education and future career paths. Recent reports from within the university suggest that pro-AI views are being spread across campus by faculty members, which is deeply concerning.
Falmouth University's identity has always been intertwined with its commitment to fostering creativity and innovation. Yet, it seems contradictory for the university to allow pro-AI sentiment to proliferate amongst its faculty, especially when AI threatens to supplant the very human creativity we are taught to value. Students have noted instances where PowerPoint presentations appeared to be AI-generated, an issue that raises questions about the dedication of some staff members to their roles. We are paying substantial fees for an education grounded in human creativity, not artificial productivity.
Falmouth is also proud of its environmentally conscious stance. The environmental implications of AI, including increased energy use and electronic waste, are at odds with the university's sustainability goals. Therefore, promoting or tolerating pro-AI views contradicts the ethical and environmental principles Falmouth stands for.
We call upon the administration of Falmouth University to take immediate action. This includes ensuring that faculty members uphold the university's creative, ethical, and environmental values by discouraging the spread of pro-AI rhetoric and reinforcing the importance of human-driven innovation.
It is crucial that Falmouth University remains a leader in creative education without succumbing to trends that compromise the principles it was founded upon. We urge the university to reaffirm its commitment to genuine creativity, ethical practices, and a sustainable future.
Join us in demanding meaningful action from Falmouth University. Sign this petition to ensure that our university truly supports and nurtures the creativity of its students.
