Stop Executions In IRAN

The Issue

Open letter to Mr. Javaid Rehman about the situation in IRAN.

Mr. Javaid Rehman,

Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran

The people of Iran have been taking to the streets in search for their basic human rights since the killing of Mahsa Amini by the “Morality Police”. In response, the government has taken extreme repressive measures resulting in the deaths of nearly 600 Iranians including about 60 children. Thousands of protesters have been injured, including people who have lost their eyesight due to the use of shotguns. Despite international humanitarian laws, the security forces and Basiji militias have been using ambulances for arrests and for transporting their forces. An estimated 20,000 Iranians have been arrested and detained for their participation in the protests. Iranian authorities are now using sham trials to execute some of the detainees. So far, two brave Iranians, Mohsen Shekari and Majidreza Rahnavard, have been executed. At least 26 more protesters could face execution, including a tortured medical doctor, Hamid Ghare-Hasanlou.
We the Iranian physicians and health professionals from all around the world demand that the international community takes action to stop the execution of Iranian protesters. It is time for the international organizations and leaders of the free world to take meaningful action. People should not lose their lives for participating in protests and exercising their rights to freedom of expression.
