The economic developments are a reality of modern Australia, but they should not come at the expense of our unique wildlife. The government and developers must realise that the natural heritage of the country holds more than just beauty, it holds significance for our biodiversity and ecological balance. The proposal to expand Dreamworld and other such projects is not worth the fate of our iconic marsupials.
Koalas only thrive if they have abundant access to their primary food source—certain species of eucalyptus trees. Without these, they face starvation and death. The figures are already worrying: according to the Australian Koala Foundation, it is estimated that there are fewer than 80,000 koalas left in the wild, a number that continues to dwindle as their habitats are destroyed.
