Stop Estranged Families from Hijacking the Bodies of Deceased Partners pass Daniels law
The Issue
Right now in the UK, a loophole in next-of-kin law allows homophobic, estranged biological families to legally steal the bodies of deceased LGBTQ+ individuals—completely erasing their long-term partners and ignoring their final wishes.
My name is Danny Thompson. My partner of 10 years and best friend of 19, Daniel Sheils, tragically passed away at just 39. Daniel was such a loving and caring person, he had a heart of gold, and was rejected by his biological family 20 years ago for being gay.
Because we were not married, the law treated me—his devoted partner—like a legal stranger. It allowed his estranged family to step in, take his body, move him out of London against his strict Catholic wishes, and execute a cheap, unattended cremation where his remains were scattered like rubbish with nobody present. To make it worse Daniel was anti cremation and despite me offering to pay for him to be buried they refused me! they used the law to erase him,And denied him of his final wish , because the law handed them sole authority, they permanently blocked a vital hospital negligence investigation into his death, denying Daniel justice.
No one should ever endure this trauma. We are demanding Parliament pass Daniel’s Law, built on three unbreakable pillars:
The Adversarial Exclusion Clause: Automatically strip next-of-kin rights from biological relatives with a proven history of hostility, estrangement, or bigotry.
Presumption of Partnership Rights: Automatically recognize unmarried, long-term cohabiting partners as the legal default next-of-kin.
The 14-Day Emergency Investigation Lock: Give partners the immediate legal right to freeze the movement of a body for 14 days if medical negligence is suspected, preventing families from destroying evidence.
Sign this petition to protect unmarried couples, defend LGBTQ+ dignity, and force Parliament to pass Daniel’s Law. Blood should not equal love when it chooses to hate.
