The Issue

In recent months, the vibrant democracy of Zambia has been marred by escalating electoral violence. These events are deeply concerning for many of us, both Zambians and members of the international community who hold democracy and human rights dear. The promise of peaceful elections and democratic processes is under threat, and it is crucial to address this now to safeguard our country's democratic integrity and future prosperity.

Numerous reports highlight a disturbing trend of violence, intimidation, and disruptions impacting political activities across the nation. Peaceful assemblies, an essential component of any functional democracy, are under siege. Participants are threatened, members of the public are attacked, and the political climate is rife with fear. Even worse, those entrusted with maintaining peace and order, the police, have been accused of acting in ways that exacerbate rather than resolve tensions. This pattern not only endangers individuals but also undermines the very foundations of democracy in Zambia.

The stakes of this situation are high, impacting the very fabric of our nation. Electoral violence creates a dangerous environment that discourages public participation. It breeds fear amongst citizens who have the constitutional right to engage in peaceful protest and political participation. Moreover, it sabotages the electoral process, leading to contested results, loss of faith in democratic institutions, and potentially long-lasting political instability.

We must act now, with urgency and commitment. Therefore, we call upon the Government of the Republic of Zambia to take immediate steps to protect peaceful assemblies. The government should implement robust measures to ensure responsible policing, wherein officers are held accountable for their actions and trained to handle electoral periods with neutrality and respect for human rights. Law enforcement should focus on de-escalating violence and safeguarding all citizens’ rights to freely express their political views without fear.

Furthermore, we demand that every perpetrator of electoral violence be held accountable, irrespective of their political affiliations or status. The justice system must act impartially and decisively, ensuring that all violations of electoral peace are met with appropriate legal consequences.

Zambia's future depends on the actions we take today. With united voices, we urge the Zambian government and all stakeholders involved to prioritise peace, democracy, and the protection of fundamental freedoms. Let us preserve the democratic values that define our nation.

Join us in this crucial initiative to ensure a fair, safe, and peaceful electoral environment in Zambia. Your support is vital. Sign the petition to make a stand for democracy and peace in Zambia today.
