Stop early seasonal decor displays in stores
The Issue
Every year, as August rolls around, I find myself walking through stores with mounting frustration. The reason? Shelves are already stocked with Halloween and fall decorations, well before summer has even bid its farewell. It's a trend that's not only confusing but downright affecting. The joy and comfort I find in fall, a season synonymous with warm colors and crisp air, come crashing down when I cannot indulge in its spirit during its rightful time. Instead, by October, when I wish to truly revel in autumn's embrace, I am sidelined by the premature arrival of Christmas decor.
I know I am not alone in this sentiment. Many of us find solace and happiness in each season’s unique charm, but this rushed retail practice crushes that joy. According to a study by the National Retail Federation, 43% of consumers feel that stores start selling holiday content too early. It takes away the anticipation, the excitement, that each distinct season brings.
While businesses might argue that having decorations out early improves sales, it can actually backfire. Many loyal customers, disillusioned by the early shift, might hold back on purchasing until they feel the season is appropriate. It's understandable to get items ready, but let’s not forget the importance of timing. Retailers can stagger their displays, slowly segueing from season to season to preserve the joy and ensure the shopping experience is refreshing, not exhausting.
Let’s urge our retailers to align their inventory with the calendar, providing summer goods in summer and fall merchandise in fall. This way, when October rolls around, we are surrounded by the sights and smells of autumn instead of battling for space among snowmen and Santa Claus. Other retailers like Homesense and Walmart are starting to adjust their timelines based on customer feedback, understanding the impact on shopping behaviour.
Join me in petitioning these stores to adjust their display schedules. By signing this petition, you'll help restore the beauty and distinctiveness of our cherished seasons and holidays. Together, we can bring back the joy of seasonal shopping—one season at a time. Please sign and share this petition to make shopping a pleasure and not a seasonal confusion.
