Dollar General failed to adequately notify of the public hearing in December. Members of this group were in attendance and brought attention to DG misinforming the public by stating the zoning meeting was at the courthouse when it is in fact at the extension office. DG then did not submit their public notices for the January meeting on time.
We are anticipating this will be on the agenda for the February meeting, however, it is totally dependent on DG sending accurate notices on time. We will keep you all updated!
Also, big thanks to everyone who has donated to fund the banners and signs you may have seen peppered around the county.
PUBLIC MEETING DATE: TBD
The proposed new Dollar General is located approximately 2 miles east of the Hwy 36 bridge crossing Raccoon Lake.
Parke County is being exploited. A private developer plans to rezone agricultural land into commercial property to build ANOTHER Dollar General. There are already eight Dollar General stores within a 15-mile radius—do we need one more?
This isn’t just another store—it’s a risk to our community’s values, economy, and heritage. Here's why:
Dollar General HURTS LOCALS
These stores are notorious for draining local economies. They undercut small businesses with unsustainable pricing strategies, leaving our beloved local shops struggling to survive. Studies show that dollar stores reduce access to fresh food and hurt local business ecosystems. Dollar Generals are unattractive and linked to declining property values in nearby areas. They are symbols of economic depression rather than growth. The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Department of Community Economic Development details more negative impacts here.
Dollar General HURTS THEIR EMPLOYEES
Dollar General pays unlivable wages and hires an insufficient number of employees, leading to understaffed stores rife with safety issues, pricing deception, and customer inconvenience. There have been nationwide employee walkouts due to them facing an increased risk of assault from being understaffed. Additionally, Multiple states have filed lawsuits or fined Dollar General for fostering an environment that harms their employees and just a few months ago was fined $12 million dollars for repeated workplace violations.
Dollar General STEALS FROM YOU
Dollar General has faced multiple lawsuits over allegations of deceptive pricing practices, where customers were reportedly charged more at checkout than the prices displayed on shelves. Key developments include:
State-Level Lawsuits:
In Ohio, Dollar General settled a $1 million lawsuit alleging bait-and-switch pricing practices, agreeing to measures like enhanced training and sufficient staffing to prevent further discrepancies. In New Jersey, the retailer paid $1.2 million after inspectors found over 2,000 pricing errors across 58 stores. In Missouri, an investigation revealed overcharges averaging $2.71 per item, leading to another lawsuit under state consumer protection laws.
Class-Action Efforts:
Attorneys have been gathering plaintiffs for broader litigation to recover funds for affected customers and potentially force systemic changes to Dollar General’s pricing practices.
Dollar General HURTS OUR CULTURE
Parke County is Stunning. Neighbors from states away come to experience our nice slice of life: whether it's our plentiful state and natural parks, beautiful lakes, world renown idyllic and Historic Covered Bridges, or even just cruising our scenic backroads. Additionally, this proposed location is adjacent to the Miami Indians of Indiana tribal lands. The Miamis were gifted the land by a local veteran whose wish was to see the land returned to the Miamis and the tribe become responsible stewards of the land to remain natural and maintain the integrity of this culturally and spiritually significant space.
