Stop Discrimination: Let These Girls Play Bantam Hockey

Stop Discrimination: Let These Girls Play Bantam Hockey
The Issue
Three talented and dedicated young athletes were denied the opportunity to play Bantam-level hockey—not because of their ability, but because they are girls.
Each of these players trained, competed, and successfully demonstrated the skills required to compete at the Bantam level alongside their peers. They met the physical and competitive standards of the division, including checking. Yet despite earning their place through evaluation, they were excluded and directed to play only on an all-girls team.
This decision reflects an outdated and discriminatory mindset that unfairly limits female athletes. It denies them the opportunity to grow, compete at their appropriate level, and gain the experience necessary to advance in the sport. Even more concerning, it sends a message that their hard work and achievements are less valued.
This is not just about three players—it’s about fairness and equal opportunity in youth sports.
Established guidelines clearly permit girls to participate on coed teams through the Bantam level. These athletes met those standards through the formal evaluation process. Notably, they have previously been called upon to play at this level when teams were short players—demonstrating that their abilities are recognized when convenient.
The justification that this decision was based on “numbers” raises serious concerns. If roster spots were limited, placements should have been determined by merit—not gender. Prioritizing boys over equally or more qualified girls is discrimination, plain and simple.
Youth sports must be grounded in skill, dedication, teamwork, and sportsmanship—not bias.
We Are Calling On The Organization To:
Place these players in the Bantam division based on their evaluated skill level
Ensure all future placement decisions are made transparently, fairly, and without discrimination
Uphold and enforce policies that support inclusion and equal opportunity for all athletes
We are also requesting a formal review of this decision and a written explanation of the criteria used.
This petition is supported by parents, coaches, and community members who believe in fair and equitable treatment for all athletes.
Every athlete deserves the opportunity to compete at the level they have earned.
Add your name to stand for fairness, inclusion, and accountability in youth sports.
