The Issue

We are asking for humanitarian considerations or a Temporary Resident Permit for Devraj Singh, a Dalit victim of extreme torture in  India who is threatened with deportation to India after exhausting legal recourses here in Canada.  Though his story was judged credible and the tribunal accepted that he was tortured, he is trapped by the so-called IFA, the Internal Flight Alternative, that is, the refugee tribunal refuses real refugees from India by pretending that they could live somewhere else in their own country.

For Devraj, who has been detained and tortured by the Delhi Police, this is extremely dangerous. The police will never leave him alone.  Devraj Singh is a singer and a religious worker in the Sikh religion. A highly skilled and respected musician, Devraj has performed in many of the most famous gurdwaras (Sikh temples) in Delhi, northern India and internationally. It is impossible for him to hide in his own country or to live a normal life free from danger.

The decisions regarding his situation violate Canada’s international human rights obligations under the Convention against Torture of the United Nations. This victim of torture should not be sent back to face torture again in India, a country with a record of horrific human rights violations against religious minorities and political dissidence.

Please support Devraj by contacting your Member of Parliament and asking them to support his right to remain in Canada or sign our petition to express your support.
