The Issue

Our community in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, is rapidly losing its precious green spaces due to relentless development. Hilltop Needmore Town Park stands as one of the last few bastions of nature amidst the urban sprawl, providing residents with a serene escape to connect with nature, enjoy outdoor activities, and preserve the environmental balance. It is vital that we act now to protect this invaluable space from being turned into yet another concrete jungle.

The proposed development at Hilltop Needmore Town Park threatens to destroy the unique landscape that supports local wildlife, diverse plants, and offers a refuge for our community. According to the American Forests organization, tree canopies in urban areas help reduce temperatures, improve air quality, and enhance the well-being of its residents. Preserving our park aligns with sustainable development practices by prioritizing environmental health and quality of life.

Not only does this park serve as a natural sanctuary, but it also holds recreational and social significance for the people of Fuquay-Varina. Families gather for picnics, children play freely, and individuals unwind from daily stressors in this vital community anchor on it's lovely trails and wildlife viewing points. Its natural beauty and tranquility inspire creativity and foster community ties.

BALD EAGLES can OFTEN be seen fishing the ponds and flying over the park. It is assumed that nesting has occurred.

Our appeal to the Fuquay-Varina Town Council and Mayor to reconsider the necessity and impact of this project has fallen on deaf ears. We propose exploring alternative locations for development or investing in renovating existing structures within urban areas, which could meet expansion needs without sacrificing our natural landscapes.

Our community has very few preserved green areas. Open spaces serve everyone—they are inclusive, accessible, and beneficial to citizens of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. They offer room for reflection, exercise, connection with nature, and unstructured play.

Ballfields, by contrast, are exclusive and serve a narrower purpose. These fields are limited to organized teams, scheduled use, and those with the time and economic means to participate. They can create barriers to access, with participation often influenced by age, resources, and structured program availability.

Both types of spaces have value—but they are not interchangeable. Once natural greenspace is lost, it cannot be easily restored.

Please protect and preserve Hilltop Needmore Town Park in its current form, for the benefit of all residents—now and for generations to come.

We must protect our natural heritage and maintain the character of our community by opposing this development. Every signature brings us closer to safeguarding this cherished green space. Please sign this petition to voice your support and let your stance be known.

Together, we can make a difference for our environment and community.
