Help Protect Shepherds Close’s Green Corridor
Our beloved green corridor at Shepherds Close faces a grave threat from destructive development. The developer, Didier Ryan of Undercurrent Architects, together with partner Candice Lake, have criticised our satirical campaign image as “misleading.”
>>>>However, the image was crafted to spur honest public dialogue about appropriate design in this sensitive conservation area.<<<<
The developer, ironically named their project - The House of the Lost Forest, this commercial project starkly contrasts with the Shepherds Close proposal. Where the House of the Lost Forest exemplifies harmonious coexistence with nature—including bats, owls, and ancient woodland—the Shepherds Close planning proposal threatens precious green space and vital habitats.
This deeply ironic contradiction underlines the urgent need for public scrutiny and opposition.
Though green roofs may reduce visual impact, genuine acceptance requires honest engagement with scale, context, materials, and heritage—elements notably absent.
After felling 19 mature trees, the developers themselves wrote to residents:
“I apologise for the inconvenience and unfortunate removal of trees last week.”
Ecology reports highlight significant native species such as Allium paradoxum (Few-flowered Garlic), Allium triquetrum (Three-cornered Garlic), and mature native trees, including lime, ash, and sycamore.
Crucially, Shepherds Close hosts protected species such as bats and owls, with legal safeguards. Disturbance or destruction of these sites carries severe penalties; planning law mandates rigorous assessment and mitigation.
The developers’ promise to replace trees post-construction cannot offset the irreversible loss.
This development endangers natural ecosystems and the heritage of a Conservation Area adjoining Parkland Walk.
