Stop denying part-time uni students maintenance loans
The Issue
I am writing this petition out of deep frustration and concern, not just for myself but for numerous students who are facing an unjust situation regarding maintenance loans. I am a part-time university student, and like many others, I diligently balance my studies with a full-time job. This is not an easy task, but it is a necessary sacrifice to improve my education and future prospects.
Recently, the situation took a troubling turn when our part-time course, which I attend in person, was incorrectly classified as a distance learning course. This decision has led the Student Finance and the Department of Education to rule that part-time students like me no longer qualify for maintenance loans. This means that despite the obligation to be physically present for learning, we are now being falsely identified as distant learners and have been deemed ineligible for the financial support we desperately need.
The inaccuracies in classification are more than just administrative errors. They have severe ramifications for our financial stability and educational pursuits. We are now being told that we are not receiving the necessary financial support and that we have potentially been overpaid by past maintenance loans—an assertion that may demand immediate repayment. This financial burden is not just unfair; it is detrimental to our chances of completing our education.
Part-time students contribute massively to the economy by working full-time while also enhancing their education. Data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) highlights that part-time students comprise a significant percentage of the UK’s higher education population, with many in need of the same financial support as full-time students. Moreover, a survey from the National Union of Students (NUS) shows that financial barriers are a leading cause of dropout rates among students.
I urge the Department of Education and Student Finance to reconsider their guidelines on maintenance loans for part-time students. Reevaluate the classification system that unjustly penalizes part-time, in-person attendees and provide them with the essential support they deserve. We need a fair and equitable process that acknowledges the realities of part-time students and supports their educational ambitions.
By signing this petition, you will help advocate for a just system that bridges the gap between policy and practice, ensuring that all students, regardless of their mode of study, receive the support they need to succeed. Please sign and support us in righting this wrong.
