Stop deadly heat conditions in Florida prisons

Stop deadly heat conditions in Florida prisons
The Issue
A new report reveals that incarcerated people at Dade Correctional Institution in Florida were subjected to life-threatening heat this past summer—with the heat index reaching an unbearable 119 degrees inside the facility. Some housing areas stayed above 88 degrees for over 120 straight days.
Many of the men incarcerated at Dade are elderly, medically vulnerable, or taking medications that make them more sensitive to heat. One 74-year-old man reportedly died after telling others, “Man, it’s so hot in here.” He was housed in a crowded dorm with no relief from the heat. More than half the population at Dade Correctional is over 50. This isn’t just inhumane—it’s dangerous and potentially deadly.
Despite clear warnings and tragic outcomes, the Florida Department of Corrections has failed to ensure safe indoor temperatures. Fans and natural ventilation aren’t enough when the heat index is regularly above 100. Without intervention, more lives will be lost.
We’re calling on Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Department of Corrections to immediately take these steps:
- Cap the indoor heat index in all state prisons at a maximum of 88 degrees, following expert guidelines.
- Install adequate cooling systems in housing units, especially for elderly and medically vulnerable individuals.
- Provide transparent public data on heat levels and any heat-related illnesses or deaths.
Florida has the resources and responsibility to protect the basic health and safety of people in its custody. We cannot wait for a 2026 trial to bring change. Lives are on the line now.
Sign this petition if you agree: the state must act immediately to protect people in Florida prisons from extreme and deadly heat.
