The Issue

I am a passionate gamer and feel incredibly frustrated by the ongoing crisis in the availability and cost of essential PC components, particularly graphics cards and RAM. Increasingly, datacenters are purchasing these components in bulk, leaving individual consumers like myself battling skyrocketing prices and scarce stock. For those of us who find joy and community in gaming, this situation is severely limiting access to a hobby that should be accessible to everyone.

Over the past few years, the demand for powerful GPUs has surged, driven largely by the expansion of datacenters and the growing popularity of digital services. According to reports, global data center construction is expected to grow by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.58% from 2021 to 2026. This rapid growth means datacenters are acquiring vast quantities of graphics cards, which in turn creates a shortage for gamers and general consumers.

While we understand the essential role datacenters play in powering the digital infrastructure, there needs to be a balance that allows individual consumers access to reasonable prices and availability of PC components. One possible solution is for manufacturers and distributors to set aside a percentage of their production solely for retail consumers. Another approach could involve creating regulatory measures to cap bulk purchases of graphics cards by large companies, ensuring that there are enough units to meet consumer demand at fair prices.

The impact of this shortage extends beyond just financial inconvenience. Gaming is not just a pastime for many; it's a form of stress relief, a creative outlet, and a way to stay connected with others. Preventing access to affordable components marginalizes a community that thrives on inclusivity and connection.

By signing this petition, you are supporting the call for regulatory intervention and industry-wide practices that balance the needs of datacenters and the consumer market. Everyone should have the affordable opportunity to pursue their passion, not just corporations. Please sign and help us bring about change in the gaming component market.
